“The Global War on Morris” by Steve IsraelMeet Morris Feldstein, a pharmaceutical salesman from Long Island. He loves the Mets; he loves his wife, Rona; and he loves things just the way they are. He doesn’t enjoy the news; he doesn’t like to argue; he doesn’t make waves. Rona wants to change the world, but Morris wants the world to leave him alone. All of this changes when Morris is seduced by a lonely, lovesick receptionist at one of the offices along his sales route; and in a moment of weakness, he charges a non-business expense to his company credit card. No big deal. Easy mistake. But the government’s top-secret surveillance program, anchored by a giant supercomputer known as NICK, thinks differently and eventually begins to thread together the disparate strands of Morris’s life.

“The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey” by Rinker BuckTraveling from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Baker City, Oregon, during the course of four months, author Rinker Buck is accompanied by three cantankerous mules, his ever-optimistic brother, Nick, and a Jack Russell terrier named Olive Oyl. Along the way, they dodge thunderstorms in Nebraska, chase runaway mules across the Wyoming plains, scout more than 500 miles of nearly vanished trail on foot, cross the Rockies and make a desperate 50-mile march for water. Buck’s lighthearted narrative brings to life just how difficult the Overland Passage was as he and his brother face historic and modern obstacles in their re-enactment of the kind of journey that hasn’t been made in more than 150 years.
