GREENFIELD — Hancock County Public Library officials are always looking for ways to make reading more entertaining. To help kick off the summer reading program, they plan to try to break the Guinness World Record for most people balancing books on their heads at once. Here’s what you need to know.

1. They need your help

Library officials looking for 1,000-plus volunteers to set the world record, which currently sits at 998. The event will take place Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Greenfield-Central High School Football Field, 810 N. Broadway. A back-up rain date has been set for June 13 from 2-4 p.m.

2). It’s BYOB

Be sure to bring a book to balance on your head. The book must be no larger than 12.2-by-9 inches and no smaller than 9-by-5.9 inches. Schools, businesses and organizations are encouraged to take part in the event.

3). You can’t stand still

Participants must be able to walk 5 and half yards while balancing a book on their head. Everyone will walk the distance at the same time. To succeed, everyone must finish the course and not use their hands to balance the book. Library officials are running a promotion via Twitter to have people tweet pictures of themselves balancing a book #booksonbrains.
