Former Marauder earns collegiate track honor

Mt. Vernon graduate and Franklin College junior Eric Thompson was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team following the HCAC men’s indoor track and field team championship meet.

Thompson recorded two top-five finishes to help the Grizzlies finish sixth in the championship Feb. 21 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He placed third in the mile and tallied a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run.

Thompson’s mile time of 4 minutes, 26.22 seconds ranks fourth all-time among Franklin indoor runners.

Greenfield-Central key athletic dates released

The Greenfield-Central High School baseball team will host a bowling fundraiser March 14 at Strike Force Lanes in Greenfield. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., with the event from 6 to 10 p.m. Cost is $25 per person. Lane sponsorships are available for $50.

Tryouts for the Greenfield-Central softball team will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Monday in the Greenfield-Central Fieldhouse. Interested student-athletes must have a complete physical on file, along with all other paperwork turned into the athletics office before tryouts, to participate.

Greenfield-Central winter sports award programs will be conducted on the following dates: wrestling, Saturday, 6 p.m., Beeson’s Chatter Shack; cheerleading, March 16, 6:30 p.m., Cougar Meeting Room; swimming and diving, March 19, 6 p.m., cafeteria.

Royals’ annual 3-on-3 tournament coming soon

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will conduct its annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament March 14. The tourney will consist of five divisions of play for boys and girls, as well as an open division for those older than high school age.

Sectional 17 field reset after judge’s decision

Pursuant to the preliminary injunction granted Monday in Lake County court regarding the Griffith and Hammond boys basketball teams, Sectional 17 will begin today at Hammond Gavit.

The two teams originally were suspended for the season by the IHSAA following a brawl between the two squads Feb. 7. The court decision reinstated the schools for the sectional tourney. The Sectional 17 schedule is:

Game 1: Griffith vs. Lighthouse CPA, today, 7 p.m.

Game 2: Hammond Gavit vs. Gary Roosevelt, Friday, 6 p.m.

Game 3: Bowman Academy vs. Hammond. Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game 4: Hammond Clark vs. Winner of Game 1, Saturday, 6 p.m.

Game 5: Winner of Game 2 vs. Winner of Game 3, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

Championship: Monday, 7:30 p.m.
