Staff Reports

The New Palestine girls soccer team was pushed to the limit on Wednesday night but never backed down.

The Dragons faced an early deficit, but they rallied back and defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Greenfield-Central, 3-2, in a tense penalty-kick shootout.

Greenfield-Central scored first early in the first half when Addie Bennett cleaned up a well-struck free kick by Kambell Trapp.

But the Dragons battled back and tied the game when Addie Halter was taken out in the penalty area on a questionable call. Lucy Miller converted the ensuing penalty kick.

The remainder of the game was a back-and-forth contest, but the Cougars once again took a one-goal lead on a penalty kick by Kelsi McLaughlin with 10 minutes left.

The Dragons responded and scored with 1:38 left in regulation when Moriah Corey finished off a corner kick by Maggie Murphy.

After 14 minutes of scoreless overtime, the teams went to penalty kicks.

Dragon goalkeeper Whitney Miller made two saves in the shootout, while Abby Blachly, Abbey Barnard, Maddy Potter and Lucy Miller scored for the Dragons, the latter clinching the victory.
