GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Council approved a request Wednesday, July 1, by Sheriff Brad Burkhart to add automatic license plate readers to deputies’ cars.

The license plate readers will allow deputies to quickly scan plates to determine whether a car has been reported stolen, an alternative to manually typing in the license plate number while driving. The sheriff’s department will enter into a 5-year contract that includes service and repairs of the technology.

The cost of the readers, for seven cars, will be $69,000.
