FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon girls basketball team cruised to their second straight victory Tuesday night, defeating visiting Richmond 60-40.

The Marauders improved to 9-10 on the season after the win and remain a factor in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings at 3-1 for third overall.

Mt. Vernon is one game behind the Greenfield-Central Cougars (4-1), who beat HHC foe New Castle on Tuesday. The Marauders trail front-runners New Palestine (5-1) and Pendleton Heights (5-1) in the HHC standings. Mt. Vernon travels to Greenfield-Central on Friday night.

Against Richmond, the Marauders were led by senior Sophie Williams with 27 points on 10 of 12 shooting from the field. Williams shot 83 percent overall and was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. She finished with a double-double, hauling in 10 rebounds to go with three steals and an assist.

Lexi Shelton had 16 points in the win for the Marauders. She went 6 of 10 from the field and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Shelton added five rebounds and three assists.

Sydnee Perry had six assists with seven points.

Richmond was led by Braxtyn Hurley with 19 points, followed by Anna Creech with eight points.

The Marauders final three regular-season games are against HHC opponents. After playing Greenfield-Central on the road, Mt. Vernon hosts New Castle (2-4 HHC) on Tuesday and Delta (0-5 HHC) on Jan. 25.
