GREENFIELD — The county tourism commission voted unanimously Tuesday to provide grant funding to Greenfield’s downtown theater.

The $55,000 grant request came after county leaders changed funding methods for the theater, leaving the arts community worried the venue could close.

The Hancock County Visitors Bureau, which owns the theater, is now required to ask the tourism commission for money to fund operating expenses and must submit a twice-annual report explaining how the money is used, the commission voted. In the past, the theater was guaranteed a portion of tax dollars charged to hotel guests, a practice tourism commission leaders said lacked transparency.

Regular reports will help taxpayers see how money is used to support the venue, they said.
