Sun scorch Fever 89-73

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Jasmine Thomas paced five double-figure scorers for the Connecticut Sun while earning a wire-to-wire 89-73 victory over the Indiana Fever Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena.

East-leading Connecticut used a 9-0 first-quarter run for an early 16-4 lead, and never looked back. The Sun scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to lift the gap to 31 points, 59-28.

Ben Davis High School product Alex Bentley hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 34. The Sun’s lead reached 38, Indiana’s largest deficit of the season.

Indiana returns to Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Friday to host the Chicago Sky on Breast Health Awareness Night at 7 p.m.

Newgarden takes IndyCar championship lead

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Josef Newgarden completed what he started at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, bursting into the Verizon IndyCar Series championship lead after winning the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio in dominant fashion.

Newgarden led 73 of 90 laps, taking the checkered flag 5.1556 seconds ahead of Team Penske teammate Will Power. It gave the Tennessean back-to-back wins, following his triumph July 16 at the Honda Indy Toronto.

Newgarden also vaulted atop the season standings for the first time in his six-year IndyCar Series career. He is the first American-born driver to lead the championship since Ryan Hunter-Reay won the title in 2014.
