Derek Scott Young, 57, of Greenfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at Hancock Regional Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family. Derek was born on July 18, 1959, in Memphis, Tenn., to Ret. Col. James and Dr. Mary (Horne) Young.

Derek graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, Ga., in 1977. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Writing from Kaplan University in 2009. Derek married the love of his life, Vonda (Smith) Young on September 24, 2016. He was a loving, caring, clever, and free spirited man.

Derek’s kindness and good humor made him easy to like. He had a lifelong appreciation of music, photography, and sports, especially the San Antonio Spurs, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was previously employed at the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department in Texas and most recently, Citizens Energy Group in Indianapolis.

Surviving Derek is his loving wife, Vonda Young; father, James (Charlotte) Young; sons, Brandon, Roderek, and Quentin Young; daughters, Phylicia and Briana Young; brother, Christopher (April) Young; sister, Courtney Young; and grandson, Nolan Avery Price.

Derek was preceded in death by his mother, Dr. Mary Young.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel of Greenfield, 1780 W. Main St, Greenfield. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Will Harris officiating.
