Marauders boys golf bests Triton Central

The Mt. Vernon boys golf team followed up their Hancock County championship with a solid 147-176 win against Triton Central on Wednesday.

Oliver Mast was medalist with a 3-under par 32 on the front nine at Arrowhead Golf Course. Xavier Dunham shot a solid 37 for the host Marauders. Will Dant and Max Heitman added 39s. Drew Richter shot a 42.

The junior varsity team also won 178-224. Blake Johnson led the Marauders with a season-best 39.

The varsity team competes in the Batesville Invitational at 9:40 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Country Club.

Dragons hosting Drive 4 Your School event

New Palestine sports fans can test drive a brand-new Ford and help raise money for Dragons athletics Saturday.

A “Drive 4 Your School” fundraiser will be at New Palestine High School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants can test drive a number of Ford vehicles, including the F-150, Mustang and Edge, without a sales pitch. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to win one of four 2017-18 New Palestine all-sports passes as well as one of several gift baskets filled with New Palestine High School apparel.

Drivers must be 18 or older and have a valid drivers’ license. Walk-ups are welcome. To sign-up early, visit newpalestine athletics.com.

Area athletes earn HHC weekly honors

Greenfield-Central’s Morganne Denny and New Palestine’s Elisha Barker both received Hoosier Heritage Conference weekly honors for their performances on the softball diamond.

Denny, an IPFW recruit, went 6-for-8 at the plate for the Class 4A No. 12 Cougars last week. The senior helped the Cougars win two conference games and improve to 4-0 in HHC.

Barker was 2-0 on the week in the pitcher’s circle, beating 4A No. 3 Center Grove and HHC foe Shelbyville. She allowed five runs in 13 innings for the top-ranked 3A Dragons.

Denny currently leads the HHC in batting average at .577 in 52 at-bats. She had 21 RBIs and seven home runs to start this week.

Barker was 10-2 on the season and had 50 strikeouts to start this week in 67.1 innings pitched. She is hitting .453 through 53 at-bats.

2017 youth baseball camp planned

The 2017 Cougar Baseball Summer Fundamental Camp is planned for June. Current Cougar Coaches along with current and former players will assist with instruction and leadership over the eight scheduled days.

The camp’s sessions will be at Molinder Field at Greenfield-Central (810 N. Broadway St., Greenfield).

Dates are June 19 to 22 for ages 9 to 12 and June 26 to 29 for ages 13 to 14. The cost of the camp is $35 before June 15 and $45 after the deadline.
