Softball state tourney pairings revealed

The IHSAA announced its pairings for the 33rd annual softball state tournament on Friday night.

Sectional tournaments will run from May 22 to 27. A one-game regional round will take place on May 30. Four-team semistates will be played June 3 with the state finals on June 10 at Ben Davis High School.

In Class 4A, host No. 11 Greenfield-Central drew Muncie Central in the first round. The winner will play either No. 10 Pendleton Heights or New Castle in the semifinals. Richmond and Anderson will play in the other semifinal game.

Mt. Vernon hosts its 4A sectional and will face Warren Central in the first round. Lawrence North and Cathedral play in the opening round with the winners to meet in the semifinals. Indianapolis Tech and Lawrence Central will play in the other semifinal game.

In Class 3A, top-ranked New Palestine opens its sectional against Herron. The winner moves on to face Bishop Chatard in the semifinals. Brebeuf Jesuit and Indianapolis Manual will play in the other semifinal game.

In Class 2A, No. 13 Eastern Hancock draws the bye at the Heritage Christian Sectional and will play Indianapolis Howe in the semifinals. Speedway faces Cardinal Ritter in the first round. Covenant Christian and Crispus Attucks play in the other opening round matchup. The winners play in the semifinals.

Local duo being inducted today

Julie (VonDielingen) Shelton and Beth (Davis) Fagan will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame today as members of the 2017 Women’s Induction Class.

A 1989 Indiana All-Star from Seymour High School, Shelton scored 1,564 points and grabbed 912 rebounds, setting nine school records.

A member of three sectional and three regional champion teams, she helped the Owls to a 1987 state finals appearance.

Excelling at Butler University, she remains the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,018 points after leading the team in scoring and rebounding for four seasons. A four-year first-team all-conference selection and 1993 Conference Player of the Year, she was a 1993 All-American and Academic All-American.

Spending 16 seasons as the girls head coach at Mt. Vernon High School, she led the Marauders to 260 wins, including a 2013 Class 3A championship and 2012 3A runner-up finish. Since 2014, she has served as assistant women’s basketball coach at Butler University.

Beth (Davis) Fagan, a 1988 Greenfield-Central graduate, was selected as first-team all-state in volleyball, softball and basketball.

She was a 1988 Indiana All-Star after setting records at Greenfield-Central in career points (1,617), rebounds (695) and assists (233).

She was named All-American by Street & Smith’s, Women’s Basketball News and USA Today. She later played three seasons at Wake Forest, becoming the third player in program history to reach 1,000 points at 1,172.
