NEW PALESTINE — A Shelbyville entrepreneur has expanded to Hancock County with a New Palestine-area clothing boutique.

The Poppy Boutique, 5971 W. U.S. 52, offers children’s, women’s and women’s plus size clothing and accessories, much like its Shelbyville predecessor, the Pink Poppy Boutique; both businesses are owned by Nicole Miller, 48.

Miller decided to open the second shop in April because of the success of her first location, and also because she wanted to sell a more diverse array of items, she said.

The shop has a breezy, light feel, offering bohemian-style clothing, jewelry, shoes and goat’s milk lotions.

“Everything is unique,” Miller said. “I don’t ever purchase anything twice, so once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

The philosophy allows Miller to keep a fresh feel and purchase new items nearly every day. Plus, in a small town, she said it’s a good idea to make sure people buying clothing won’t all be buying the exact same thing.

“No one wants to go to a ball game and see everyone dressed the same as them,” Miller said.

Miller got into the clothing business almost by mistake. Her husband, Randy Miller, is a dentist in Shelbyville. The couple bought a building there for his practice and found there was enough room for his wife to open a boutique store.

Once it was open, and performing better than expected, she knew it was time to branch out and open another shop.

The Poppy Boutique is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Jovanna Hinkle, who is also a local business owner in New Palestine, heard there was a new clothing store and just had to pop in and check it out.

“I love the style of clothing here,” Hinkle said looking through a rack of tops. “I’ll probably be here a little more than I should.”
