Greenfield-Central’s boys swimming team won the Roncalli Holiday Invitational on Tuesday. The Cougars scored 499 points to top Bloomington South, which was second with 488 points.

The girls team finished in third behind Bloomington South and Brownsburg with 363 points. Bloomington South scored 559 points in the win, and Brownsburg finished with 462.

For the boys, Ethan Kile was second in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Zach Cook won the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. Chris Joven also won Tuesday, beating the field in the 100-yard freestyle. The boys won the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay team finished in second.

On the girls side, Carley Logan finished third in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, Krista Zornes was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle and Ashley Finney was third in the 100-yard butterfly. The girls 400-yard freestyle relay team was fourth overall.

New Palestine finishes 2nd at tournament

New Palestine finished second at Tuesday’s Greensburg Tournament. The team won its opener against Noblesville 56-28. Later, the Dragons fell to Class 3A No. 8 Greensburg 47-39 in the championship game.

With its nine-game winning streak over, New Palestine is 10-4 on the season and hosts fellow Hoosier Heritage Conference co-leader Pendleton Heights at noon Saturday.

The Dragons fell behind early in the championship game Tuesday but rallied to within three by the end of the third quarter, only to see the Pirates open the fourth on a 12-4 run.

Raegan McMurray led New Palestine with 15 points. Leah Seib added eight and Haley Harrison had seven. Megan Jolly and Michaela Jones had three points each in the loss.

Against Noblesville, the Dragons jumped out to an early 14-4 lead after a quarter and led 27-15 at halftime.

McMurray led the Dragons with 17 points. Emma Grable added 10. Seib had eight and Harrison had six.

Mt. Vernon goes 2-1 at tourney

Mt. Vernon finished 2-1 at the Twin Lakes Holiday Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the first game Tuesday, the Marauders topped Logansport 47-39 before falling to Cathedral 44-27 in the second round.

In its final game, Mt. Vernon beat host Twin Lakes 71-33 to move to 4-12 this season. The win against Logansport snapped a nine-game losing streak for the team.

No individual statistics were available from the tournament.

Wrestling

Three New Palestine wrestlers advance

Three New Palestine wrestlers made it to the second day of the Evansville Mater Dei Holiday Classic on Wednesday.

At 126 pounds for the Dragons, senior Alec White (15-0) will wrestle in the semifinals. He won his first match 7-1 over Franklin’s Johnathan Kervin. He will face Matt Lee of Evansville Mater Dei (11-1) in the semifinals.

At 220 pounds, junior Landan Burton (16-1) will also wrestle in the semifinals. He won by a 21-second fall over Louisville St. Xavier’s Benjamin Deprest in the opening round, then beat Cole Werkmeister of North Posey in 1:28 in the second. He will meet Evansville Mater Dei’s Michael Boots (10-1) in the semifinals.

At 170 pounds, Logan Robinson (12-7) will compete in the wrestleback round. He won his opener 7-4 over Luke McGennis of Mt. Vernon (Posey) before falling to Franklin’s Chris Spiller by fall in the second round. He then beat Steven Wheatley of Tell City 15-2, and will wrestle New Albany’s Aaron Mosley in the consolation round to have the right to wrestle for either third or fifth place.

With 24 points, the Dragons are currently in 11th. Host Evansville Mater Dei is in first with 100 points. The championship and consolation rounds were scheduled for Thursday.
