County players earn all-district honors

After clinching its first sectional title since 2012, the Greenfield-Central girls soccer team garnered more recognition this week. 

Lucy Brand was named Top 5 Indiana Soccer Coaches Association All-District. The sophomore helped the Cougars win their first regional game in school history and reach the championship last Saturday.

Mt. Vernon’s Alexi Hardie lso was named Top-5 ISCA All-District. Marauders’ teammate Cleo Mills earned ISCA All-District First Team honors. Mt. Vernon won the Hoosier Heritage Conference title outright this season.

New Palestine’s Meaghan Matus also was selected to the all-district first team.

New Palestine football tickets available

Pre-sale tickets are available inside the New Palestine High School athletics office for the Dragons’ sectional opener today.

Tickets are $6 per person and available for purchase during regular school hours between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The Class 5A No. 2 Dragons (9-0) host rival No. 5 Columbus East (8-1) for the first-round of Sectional 14 at Kelso Stadium. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

Indians announce Victory Field upgrades

INDIANAPOLIS — After celebrating 20 seasons at Victory Field, the Indianapolis Indians will begin the next with an infusion of modern technology.

New displays, a state-of-the-art ballpark sound system, and enhanced video production capabilities will all be in place ahead of the 2017 season, Indians General Manager Randy Lewandowski announced.

All three projects totaling approximately $2.4 million are expected to be substantially complete by Feb. 17, 2017.

The Indians will host their 2017 home-opener at 7:05 p.m. April 6.

Colts sign Coffman as backup tight end

INDIANAPOLIS — Another rash of injuries prompted the Indianapolis Colts to make a flurry of moves this week, starting with the signing of tight end Chase Coffman.

Indy promoted rookie receiver Tevaun Smith from the practice squad to the active roster, signed receiver Marcus Leak and cornerback Frankie Williams to the practice squad and placed receiver Quan Bray on injured reserve.

The Colts also put tight end Mike Miller on the practice squad injured reserve list and released safety Lee Hightower from the practice squad.
