The Sideline – September 17

Marauders’ Ertel verbally commits to Warhawks

Mt. Vernon senior point guard Michael Ertel announced his verbal commitment to the University of Louisiana Monroe via Twitter last week.

The 6-foot-1 Indiana Junior All-Star averaged 15.8 points and dished out 3.7 assists per contest. Ertel shot 48 percent for the field.

He sank 51 3-pointers at a 39 percent average. Ertel led the team with 86 assists as the Marauders tied for the Hoosier Heritage Conference title with a 6-1 record. They finished 18-5 overall.

Gibson tosses a gem in Twins victory

Greenfield-Central graduate Kyle Gibson was lights out earlier this week against the Detroit Tigers.

Gibson threw an eight-inning gem Tuesday, holding the Tigers to one run en route to an 8-1 victory at Comerica Park. Gibson walked three and struck out four. He scattered five hits, four of them singles.

The win was Gibson’s first since Aug. 17. He was seeking his second career complete nine-inning game, but Twins manager Paul Molitor opted to pull the right-hander after he hurled 108 pitches.

“I wanted to,” Gibson said with a smile. “He told me it was mid-September, but I reminded him I’d been out six weeks earlier, so it was like the beginning of August for me. But it didn’t work. But I appreciate him giving me the eighth there.”

Gibson entered the game with a 5.34 ERA and had allowed at least four runs in four straight outings. He now has six wins and a 5.08 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 131 innings pitched.
