Gregory A. Spangler

Gregory A. Spangler, 55, went to be with the Lord Friday, September 9, 2016, at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va. He was born October 31, 1960, in Indianapolis.

Greg graduated from Eastern Hancock High School in 1979. He enlisted in the Navy, serving on the USS NASSAU, USS SCOTT, USS RICHMOND K TURNER, USS MCFAUL, and the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH.

His most recent position was as Director, Material Readiness Team, at Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic, Norfolk, Va. He also served as Explosive Safety Project Manager, OPNAV; as the Weapons Inspector for the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV), Atlantic; as Combat Systems Director of the Afloat Training Group, Atlantic; as the OIC of Navy Munitions Command Detachment, Sewells Point; and as Combat Systems Officer aboard the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH. This last Navy assignment involved taking on all shipboard responsibilities for the historic first landings of combat unmanned aerial vehicles aboard USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH. Greg retired at the rank of Commander, after 34 years of service to his country, on September 6, 2013. He also holds a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College and is PMP Certified.

Greg was a man of faith, committed to the Gideons in his service as Vice President of the Chesapeake East Camp.

In all his achievements, he held two most dear, his wife, Linda, who he married 23 December 1998, and his daughter, Faith, who is 13.

He is also survived by his father, Larry Spangler; and his siblings, Corinne Roberts, Steve Spangler, David Spangler, Melanie Boisvenue, and Scott Spangler; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Spangler.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the American Lung Association.

A memorial service will be held in Virginia at a later date.
