Noble takes 20th at Nationals

Mt. Vernon graduate Christian Noble competed with some of the country’s best this past weekend at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Noble, a Lee University recruit, was 20th overall in the 5K championship at North Carolina A&T State University’s Aggie Stadium.

The All-State cross-country and track runner finished the event in 15 minutes, 19.27 seconds. David Principe of Rhode Island won the race in 14:37.09.

Noble qualified for the 5K event with a 14:55 last October.

He placed fourth overall during the 2015-16 IHSAA Boys Cross-Country State Finals in Terre Haute (15:24.9). Noble was 16th at state in 2014 as a junior (15:42.1).

Noble won the 3,200-meter run title during the Midwest Meet of Champions last weekend. His time was 9:23.36 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

He was runner-up in the 3,200 during the IHSAA track and field state finals earlier this month.

Marauder shines at All-Star Classic

Mt. Vernon’s Michael Ertel was electric at the Eighth Annual Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic on Friday.

The incoming senior scored a game-high 35 points for the Juniors Boys White Team, but the Red Team held on to win in double overtime, 98-96.

Ertel, who was named to the Indiana Junior All-Star’s south group, added seven rebounds and six assists to his standout performance.

The two-day basketball showcase was conducted at Anderson University on Friday and Saturday, with nine games scheduled overall.

Sign up for Marauders Youth Soccer Camp

The 17th annual Marauder Youth Soccer Camp will be July 11 to 15 at the Mt. Vernon High School soccer complex.

The camp is designed for boys and girls players in first through eighth grades and is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. each day.

The camp is $60, with payment through check only.

Camp awards and certificates will be presented to participants. Campers also will receive a T-shirt.

Marauder camp director Steve Williams, assistant director Matt Mayhew and Mt. Vernon varsity players will instruct campers in basic fundamentals.

Cougars cross-country training underway

Summer conditioning for Greenfield-Central cross-country has started. Training will take place at 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays during break.

No conditioning will be July 3 to 10.

Runners will meet at Greenfield-Central High School near the cross-country sign that is next to the football practice fields.

Unser, Ahrle win Indy Legends Pro-Am at Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS – The Unser family isn’t done finding the way to Victory Circle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

On Sunday, Robby Unser — son of three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser — steered a 1965 Cobra CompR to victory with teammate Andre Ahrle in the Indy Legends Pro-Am, the spotlight event of the four-day Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational.

Thirty-three former Indianapolis 500 drivers paired with amateurs for a 50-minute race on the 2.439-mile IMS road course.

The Ahrle/Unser team won first overall and first in the “A Production” class, with Clair Schwendeman and seven-time “500” starter Richie Hearn taking second in the class.
