Pair of hoops players invited to showcase

Two local standout basketball players have been chosen to participate in the 2016 Hoosiers’ Reunion All-Star Classic this summer at The Historic Hoosiers Gym in Knightstown.

Greenfield-Central’s Tate Hall, a University of Indianapolis recruit, and Mt. Vernon’s Ariana Sandefur, an IU Southeast signee, were both selected to play in the annual showcase.

The event will take place June 3 with the girls game scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The boys game will follow at 8 p.m.

Mt. Vernon graduate continues to shine

The IPFW women’s track and field competed in two separate events this weekend, at the Hillsdale “Gina” Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and in the Crusader Open in Valparaiso.

Freshman and Mt. Vernon graduate Olivia Coleman was historic at both.

Coleman had two third place finishes during the weekend. The first was in the 400-meter dash at the “Gina” Relays where she crossed the finish line at 56.18 seconds and broke her own school record. Coleman shattered the record in her last meet at Ball State with a time of 56.62 seconds.

Coleman broke another school record in the long jump. She jumped a distance of 5.53 meters which, surpassed the previous record held by Angie Suel (5.46 meters) set back in 2006. Coleman’s mark gave her first place in the Crusader Open.

Coleman also grabbed her other third-place finish in the 200 in Valparaiso. She crossed the finish in the final heat of the event with at time of 25.93 seconds.

Mt. Vernon softball hosting Youth Night

The Mt. Vernon softball program is conducting a Youth Night on May 6 during the Marauders home game against Westfield.

All youth softball players in the eighth grade and younger are invited to join the varsity softball team for the evening.

Youth players wearing their jerseys will gain free admission. The youth events will start at 5 p.m. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m.

All youth players will be able to high-five players and line up with the team during the national anthem.

After the game, all youth players will be allowed to run the bases and have cookies with the team.

New Palestine physical night set for athletes

New Palestine High School will host its 2016 athletic physical night from 6 to 8 p.m. May 24.

All New Palestine High School and Doe Creek Middle School students participating must have a physical on file to participate in sports for the 2016-17 school year.

The cost for the physicals is $25.

The IHSAA physical form for 2016 has changed. All physicals must be signed by a physician (M.D. or D.O.) and include the physician’s license number at the bottom of the second page.

Signature stamps will no longer be accepted. The updated form is available in the New Palestine athletics office.

Because of a source error, the Mt. Vernon girls golf team roster contained incorrect information (Saturday, B4).
