To the editor:

I see that Edgar Moore is one of the candidates running for the County Council on the Republican ticket in the upcoming primary election. I checked because I could not believe it, but he is the husband of Hancock County Clerk Marcia Moore.

The primary responsibility of the council is to adopt a budget for all county offices, including that of the county clerk. So not only would Marcia Moore’s husband have a vote on the entire budget of his wife’s office, but that budget sets her salary.

How can this be? This is an extreme example of nepotism gone wild. There are 70,000 people in this county. Surely we can find someone to be on the council who does not have such an obvious conflict.
