After igniting the nets at Yorktown High School to capture their first outright Hoosier Heritage Conference title, the Greenfield-Central Cougars cut them down in celebration late Tuesday night.

Victorious 54-33 against the Yorktown Tigers to finish a perfect 7-0 in league play, the Class 4A No. 10 Cougars trekked back to their home floor for a heroes welcome — together as champions.

Previously, the team’s only other HHC title occurred during the 2012-13 season, when it shared the championship with Pendleton Heights and New Castle.

At 18-4 on the season, head coach Doug Lakers’ squad has now won six consecutive games and holds the state’s 15th overall ranking in the recent Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s Top-20 poll.

“I am just proud of the girls,” Laker said after the game, which marked his 107th win in eight seasons. “We didn’t play our best tonight, but we played well enough to win. Bottom line, we just need to keep getting better every day.”

Against Yorktown, Greenfield-Central shot 40 percent (20 of 49) from the field as junior Madison Wise led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Katie Helgason added 11 points and five steals in the win.
