Mt. Vernon’s Shelton commits to Butler

Kentucky’s loss is Butler’s gain. On Tuesday night, the Bulldogs secured Mt. Vernon senior Sydney Shelton’s verbal commitment when she officially broke the news on her Twitter feed.

“So excited to announce that I will be playing basketball at Butler University,” she posted.

Shelton, the Marauders’ all-time leading scorer, previously committed to Kentucky in 2014 and remained steadfast in her decision throughout the summer months.

Shelton’s recent change of heart will reunite her with former Mt. Vernon girls basketball coach Julie Shelton, an assistant coach at Butler and her aunt.

Julie Shelton coached the Marauders to a Class 3A state championship in 2012-13. Sydney Shelton scored 29 points in the title game against rival Hamilton Heights as the Marauders defeated the Huskies 61-47.

In three seasons, the 5-foot-9 point guard has amassed a program-best 1,491 points. She only needs 395 more points to overtake Greenfield-Central’s Ellen Hamilton as the county’s most prolific scorer in girls basketball history.

In the offseason, Shelton was one of six core Indiana Junior All-Stars.
