Cougars earn Team of the Week

The Greenfield-Central boys cross-country team was chosen by hoosierxc.com as its team of the week.

A weekly honor issued to a boys and a girls cross-country team, the program chose the Cougars for Week 4.

Greenfield-Central earned the distinction after winning the Cougarpalooza and finishing third in the Ben Davis Invitational last weekend ahead of a few top 25 ranked teams in the state.

At Ben Davis, the Cougars finished with a score of 121 behind only West Lafayette (103) and Avon (51).

Teams in the top 10 included: Ben Davis, Southport, Center Grove, Brownsburg, Lawrence North, East Noble and Plainfield.

Athletic Participation is up 20 percent at Mt. Vernon

According to the Mt. Vernon athletics department, fall athletic enrollment at Mt. Vernon High School has increased in every sport with the removal of its former “Pay-to-Participate” fee per sport of $225.

Fall sports’ total participation has increased 20 percent with 43 additional athletes.

The department believes recent success in all Mt. Vernon’s fall sports may be attributed to the larger number of athletes participating; the larger pool of athletes to choose from would support that theory.

Cross country experienced the largest increase from 30 runners in 2014 to the current 47 athletes, a 57 percent increase.

Girls golf added two players, football has eight additional students in uniform, and boys and girls’ soccer has four and one additional player(s), respectively. Boys tennis added five to their roster, cheerleading added one student and volleyball added five players and their first freshman team in years.

“We expect athletic participation to have a similar increase in winter and spring which will generate more two and three-sport athletes this year,” commented Brandon Ecker, Mt. Vernon High School athletics director. “There is no coincidence that participation in every sport increased with the $225 fee being removed; it is safe to say it is a direct relation. We are pleased we can offer athletic opportunities to all students without finances being part of the commitment decision.”
