Meeting set to discuss future of historic church

CUMBERLAND — A public meeting will be conducted at 6 p.m. today at the St. John Church of Christ, 11000 E. Washington St. in Cumberland.

City/county council member Ben Hunter, who represents the area where the church is located, has called the meeting to discuss the church’s future.

The church, located at the corner of U.S. 40 and German Church Road, is in danger of being torn down to make room for a gas station.

Church officials want to sell the land, while town officials would like to find an alternative to save the century-old structure.

An agenda for the meeting was not made available.
