Mt. Vernon grad runs down conference honors

Franklin College junior and Mt. Vernon graduate Eric Thompson was named second-team all-conference for men’s track and field.

Thompson recorded two top-five finishes to lead the Franklin College men’s track and field team at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at Transylvania University.

Thompson recorded a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run (four minutes, 7.6 seconds). He also added a fifth-place finish in the 800 (2:00.83). His fastest 800-meter time during the season of 1:56.26 was the top time among conference teams heading into the conference championships.

Greenfield-Central plans girls basketball camp

The Greenfield-Central girls basketball camp for players in incoming kindergarten to Grade 8 will be June 1 to 4 at the high school fieldhouse.

Cost is $40, which includes a basketball, T-shirt and instructional emphasis on fundamentals.

Camp times are 8 to 9 a.m. (kindergarten to Grade 2); 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. (Grades 3 to 5); and 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. (Grades 6 to 8).

Area alums set for NCAA softball tourney

After falling behind 2-0, the Ball State softball team rallied for an 11-3 win against Western Michigan Saturday to capture the Mid-American Conference Softball Championship title in Akron, Ohio.

With the win, the Cardinals (33-23) secured the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships.

Rachel Houck, a Mt. Vernon graduate and Ball State sophomore, did not play in the championship game but is hitting .366 with three home runs for the season.

Also advancing to the NCAA tourney is Indiana State, which won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament 9-2 against Missouri State.

The Sycamores (26-29) become the first current women’s team at Indiana State to advance to the NCAA tournament in school history.

New Palestine graduate Alexa Cavin (.264), a junior right fielder, went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt and a run scored in the Indiana State championship win.

High school schedules health checks, physicals

Greenfield-Central High School will host wellness checks and athletics physicals for students entering Grades 7 to 12 on May 20 at Parkway Medical Center, 300 Boyd Ave., Greenfield.

Students should sign up for a 15-minute time slot in the high school athletics office prior to Thursday. Parents of junior high students can call the high school athletics office at 317-462-9195, ext. 2, to register.
