GREENFIELD — Greenfield firefighters fought a pair of unrelated house fires Monday that displaced two local families, officials said.
Emergency crews first responded to a blaze just after 1 p.m. Monday that started in a third-floor apartment of a duplex in the 100 block of N. East Street, records show.
The family was at home when the fire started, though everyone was able to escape the house uninjured, Greenfield Fire Territory Chief James Roberts said.
When fire crews arrived, smoke could be seen coming through the roof of the home, but the fire was contained to only one room, Roberts said.

It took crews about 40 minutes to fight the blaze. Although the apartment suffered only minor structural damage, much of the family’s belonging were damaged by smoke and water, Roberts said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
A second fire started a few blocks away around 6 p.m., dispatch records show.
Neighbors called 911 after seeing flames shooting through the roof of a home in the first block of W. Pierson St. on the southwest side of the city.
Though the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it appears the blaze started on the first floor and spread into the attic, Roberts said.
A majority of the home was destroyed and fire officials consider the structure a total loss, Roberts said.
The house has been boarded up and signs have been placed on its doorways warning people not to enter.
No one was injured.
