Shirley Ann Whitfield, 79, of Carthage, Ind. passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. She was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Huntington, Ind., and was the daughter of Clayton and Velma (Bennett) Todd, both are deceased. She married Robert Leon Whitfield on Jan. 19, 1952, and he survives.

Shirley moved to Carthage at the age of eight and lived there the rest of her life. She worked eight years at Carthage Radio & Appliance Shop, and 28 years at Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home near Knightstown, Ind. Her hobbies were baking and decorating cakes, catering for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries.

In addition to her husband, she leaves behind two daughters, Patia (David) Ertel, Theresa (Terry) Speer; and one son, Gregory (Andrea) Whitfield; 9 grandchildren, Danielle Wilson, Christina Porter, Sarah McCoy, Melisa Speer, Jason Speer, Tasha DeFelice, Tonya Mason, Courtney Whitfield, Connor Whitfield; and fourteen great- grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Edith) Todd of Knightstown; two sisters, Betty (Robert) Dean of Knightstown, Sharon (Thomas) Roberts of Carthage; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Robert Todd of Anderson, William Todd of Indianapolis; three sisters, Donna Brooks-Hiner of Kennard, Frances DeWitt of Carthage and Patricia DeWitt of Rushville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel, with Reverend Ron DeWitt officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery near Carthage. Friends may call from 1–5 p.m. Sunday.
