GREENFIELD — A woman treated at Hancock Regional Hospital early Monday told doctors she was raped by an Indianapolis man at her home.

James Owens, 38, was arrested early Monday, police said. He was being held at press time on preliminary charges of rape and battery as police continued their investigation, according to jail records.

The woman came to Hancock Regional Hospital emergency room about 1:30 a.m. Monday with signs of sexual trauma, police said.

The woman told investigators Owens raped her a few hours earlier while they were together at her Greenfield home, police said.

Investigators still are working to uncover information about Owen’s relationship with the victim and why he was visiting Greenfield at the time, Greenfield police Detective Lt. Randy Ratliff said.

The woman’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening. She was released after treatment Monday morning but was expected to receive further care Monday afternoon, Ratliff said.

Detective Sgt. Nichole Gilbert is leading the criminal investigation, and Deputy Prosecutor Georgeanna Teipen, who was hired this fall to handle the prosecution of all crimes against woman and children, including rapes and sexual assaults, will handle the state’s case.

Rape cases are fairly uncommon in Greenfield; prosecutors have said the last rape conviction was in 2006.
