HANCOCK COUNTY — Flames tore through a house in the western part of the county Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at around 4:46 p.m. in the 2200 block of West U.S. 40. Sugar Creek Township Fire Chief Brandon Kleine said flames were through the roof of the two-story house upon firefighters’ arrival.

Kleine said the home was not occupied full time and that it was uninhabited at the time of the fire. One firefighter sustained a small injury in the response, he continued, adding the firefighter is doing well.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Kleine said.

Firefighters got the blaze under control in about an hour and remained on scene for about four hours, Kleine said. Along with Sugar Creek Township, firefighters from Buck Creek Township, Greenfield, Fountaintown and McCordsville also responded.
