HANCOCK COUNTY — An Indianapolis man accused of taking part in undercover drug purchases in the summer of 2019 in the county has been arrested and charged with multiple drug crimes.

Rodney D. Walters Jr., 37, 3000 block of North Irvington Avenue, faces two Level 4 felony counts of dealing in cocaine and two Level 6 felony counts of possession of cocaine.

The most serious charges carry sentences of up to 12 years in prison for each count.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, using a confidential informant, oversaw multiple purchases of cocaine from a suspect in August 2019. The transactions between the informant and the dealer were recorded via audio and video, investigators said in their report.

During each transaction, Walters showed up in a vehicle at a rendezvous point. In addition to the drugs, evidence included text messages and/or phone calls between the informant and Walters, the affidavit said.

As the investigation continued, the informant also positively identified Walters from a photo array.

While the incidents occurred last August, according to court records, the case was opened in court Tuesday, Feb. 11, and a warrant was issued for Walters at that time.

Walters appeared in Hancock County Circuit Court Tuesday, Feb. 18, for an initial hearing in front of Judge Scott Sirk, who set a $5,000 cash bond. Walters has a pretrial conference April 2 and a trial date in September.

Walters is still listed as an inmate in the Hancock County Jail.
