Dragons finish 2nd, Cougars 7th

INDIANAPOLIS — Hancock County produced four individual champions and a relay champion at Friday night’s Warren Central boys track regional.

The New Palestine Dragons finished runner-up to the hosts, scoring 102 points, well behind Warren Central’s 170. Greenfield-Central finished seventh out of 11 teams, with 47 points.

The Dragons had three individual champions and a slew of athletes advancing to next week’s regional round. Laine Schonauer won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.25, almost a full second ahead of the second-place finisher. Devon Whitaker won the 800-meter run, in 2:04:01, about a half-second ahead of second place, his teammate, Owen Kleine (2:04:56).

Drew Austin won the 1,600-meter run for the Dragons, in 4:27.75. Josh Collins also advanced in the event, finishing third (4:29.81).

New Palestine’s 4×800 relay team of Josh Ackerman, Carson Sams, Whitaker and Kleine kicked off the meet with a title, winning in 8:14.02.

Also advancing to the regional are the 4×400 relay of Schonauer, Sams, Collins and Austin, who finished second in 3:31.46, and Richard Clevenger, who finished third in the discus with a throw of 144-3.

Greenfield-Central finished first and second in the pole vault. Cody Hargett won by clearing 14 feet, and Adam Lee finished second.

Tate Helm was runner-up in the shot put, advancing to the regional, and Conner Kinnaman advances in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:13.76.

Advancing athletes will compete in Thursday’s regional, again at Warren Central, at 6 p.m.
