MARSHALL — Turkey Run State Park recently joined a number of state park properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The designation recognizes both the park’s cultural value to Indiana and its national history.

To earn designation on the registry, the park needed to meet specific criteria to be listed on the register, including its significance, age and integrity. The property being considered must also be at least 50 years old and look much the same way as it did in the past. The property must be associated with people, events, activities or developments that were important in the past.

Turkey Run’s association with Parke County recreation and its intact state park architecture met that requirement.

The Lusk Home, located within the boundaries of Turkey Run, was already listed on the register, but this new listing includes more. The historic district starts north of Sugar Creek and runs to Narrows Road on the east, to State Road 47 on the south and Cox Ford Road on the west. Trails and the Lusk Home are the farthest north resources, and Ford Covered Bridge is the farthest west.

Among Indiana state parks, Pokagon, Mounds, Shakamak and Fort Harrison already have historic districts within their boundaries, while Chain O’Lakes and Tippecanoe River state parks, among others, feature individual buildings with historic designation.

Turkey Run’s state and national register certificates will be presented to property representatives at the Indiana State Fair in August. For more information about Turkey Run State Park, visit in.gov/dnr/.
