GREENFIELD — After more than a decade of business in Greenfield, a popular footwear distributor will shutter its doors on Christmas Eve.

Payless ShoeSource, 1943 Melody Lane, will close at 5 p.m. Dec. 24, said store manager James Meyer.

The popular discount shoe retail chain closed more than 800 stores nationwide after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2017.

The Payless ShoeSource franchise has been active in Greenfield for as long as its strip mall has been around, Meyer said. While it has served as a reliable source for niche products, including slick-resistant shoes, unique footwear like dancing shoes and cheaper alternatives to popular name brand products, the company has been consistently closing down under-performing stores nationwide, Meyer said.

“The company simply made the decision we’re no longer profitable,” Meyer said. “The rest of our time in these remaining weeks will be spent focusing on liquidation, fixtures and all.”

Payless will have a clearance sale until the last day, assistant manager Tammy Jones said.

Connie Burrell, a Greenfield resident and frequent shopper at the outlet, said she was disappointed to see the closing sale sign hanging from the windows on Tuesday afternoon.

“I’ll be sad to see this place go,” Burrell said. “It’s more convenient than shopping at the Wal-Mart next door, and they’ve always had a great selection.”

“I loved working here,” Jones said. “As you can tell, people around here are nice to us. My employees and I are really feeling the hit.”
