Girls soccer

Cougars win tournament

Greenfield-Central won the Kickin’ Cancer Tournament on Saturday, where they raised $4,049 for the American Cancer Society.

Nine different players scored in the Cougars’ two wins on the day, an 8-0 win against North Knox followed by a 2-0 win against Lawrence Central. Haley Arthur, Nora Gardner and Emma Reinner each scored their first varsity goals.

Other goals were scored by Kelsi McLaughlin, Emily Davidson, Anne Marie DeKeyser, Kambell Trapp and Kennedy Trapp. Assists came from DeKeyser, Kennedy Trapp, Macy Huber, Davidson, Gardner and Arthur. Schyler Slunaker, Lucy Brand, Gardner and McLaughlin all earned the combined shut out in goal.

Dragons top HHC foe Delta

New Palestine won its second straight game Saturday, beating host Delta 6-2.

Lucy Miller had two goals and an assist in the opening half, during which the Dragons built a 6-1 lead. Abby Blachly added two goals.

Miller scored early to give the Dragons a lead. Victoria Crowder followed with a goal to extend it to 2-0. Miller then fed Emmy Giddens for a goal to make it 3-0. She scored on an assist from Maddy Miller to give the Dragons a four-goal edge.

After Delta scored, Blachly tallied a pair of unassisted goals — her first two varsity goals.

Boys soccer

Dragons drop Delta at home

New Palestine posted a 3-0 shutout of Delta Saturday afternoon at Kelso Stadium.

Adam Hunt had the shutout. Jon Moore scored two goals for the Dragons. Zach Martin also added a goal. Luke Gohmann added two assists.

Mt. Vernon hosts Classic

Mt. Vernon defeated Mooresville in the opening game of the Marauder Classic 3-0 on Saturday, then fell in the final to Plainfield in penalty kicks.

Noah Whitehouse recorded the shutout in the opener. Matt Thompson, Gavin Brandon and Drew Heitman assisted on goals by Tylin Broaders, Jacob Knepper and Logan Angelopulos.

Knepper got the loan goal in regulation of the finals, assisted by Broaders.

Cougars fall to Batesville

Greenfield-Central couldn’t find the back of the net Saturday, falling to Batesville 1-0.

The Cougars outshot Batesville 22 to seven but could not score against a tough defense that kept 10 players behind the ball at all times in the final third.

Volleyball

Marauders lose 2nd in row

Mt. Vernon lost its second straight match Saturday, falling to Center Grove 20-25, 17-25, 23-25.

After a 10-0 start, Mt. Vernon is now 11-5 on the season.

Cougars drop 2 matches

Greenfield-Central lost matches to Cathedral and Noblesville on Saturday, falling 3-1 in each match.

The Cougars are now 13-7 on the season.

Cross-Country

Dragons shine at invite

The New Palestine cross-country teams had strong performances Saturday at one of the state’s biggest meets, the FlashRock Invitational at Northview Church in Carmel.

The Dragon girls competed in the championship division, featuring 15 of Indiana’s elite teams. New Palestine finished sixth with 201 places.

Sophomore Brenna Shaw led the Dragons with a 24th-place finish (19:57.92). Freshman Emily Adam was 42nd (20:37.49). Senior Victoria Crowder placed 49th (20:48.42). Sophomore Kendall Mann was 52nd (20:50.50), while junior Kaylin Casner was 61st (21:11.51).

The Dragon boys finished second in the invitational division, placing two runners in the top 10.

Seniors Drew Austin and Josh Collins led the way finishing fifth and sixth. Austin ran 17:05.22, Collins 17:15.09. Junior Devon Whitaker was 15th with a time of 17:42.61. Senior Kyler Harrison was 26th (18:08.59) and senior Caleb Stirm 28th (18:10.04).

Royals 2nd at own invite

Eastern Hancock’s boys finished second at Saturday’s Eastern Hancock Invitational, with three runners earning top 10 finishes.

Skyler Schrope was second with a 18:32.53, Daniel Campbell third with an 18:46.87 and Nick Edwards sixth with a 19:37.63.

Individually, three Royals girls finished in the top 10 as well. Annie Lindsay was fourth with a 24:05.98, Ashton Willis was fifth with a 25:14.94, and Lilly Combs was ninth with a 26:09.65.

Teams strong at invite

Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon had strong showings at Saturday’s Yorktown Invitational.

The Cougars’ boys team finished second, led by Parker Niemeier (3rd), Conner Kinnaman (9th) and Luke Muckerheide (18th). The girls team finished seventh and was led by runner-up Audrey Brinkruff and Sarah Muckerheide (19th).

The Marauders boys finished third in the 15-team field. The top finisher for Mt. Vernon was sophomore Evan Rappe in 16th. Mt. Vernon’s girls finished second, led by Lydia Carrell in ninth and Rilee Hartman in 12th.
