MADISON COUNTY — A late morning crash on Interstate 69 police say was caused by dangerous driving sent a local man to the hospital with injuries.

At around 11:20 a.m., police responded to I-69 near the 227 mile marker for a crash involving a single vehicle. According to reports, Indiana State Police Trooper Chris Noone arrived on scene and found a 2001 Honda Civic that had gone over an embankment off the right side of southbound I-69.

In his investigation, Noone stated that the car’s driver, McCordsville resident Eric Shetler, 24, had been traveling in the southbound lanes passing vehicles at an unsafe speed. According to Noone, Shetler approached a semi also driving in the left lane at a high rate of speed, and swerved to the right to avoid hitting the truck. While swerving, Noone reported, Shetler lost control of the vehicle. The Civic left the right side of the roadway, rolled over an embankment, and came to rest on its wheels after traveling 373 feet off the road.

Shetler was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over the embankment and hit an informational sign. He was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Anderson with a neck injury.

According to Noone, speed was a factor in the crash, and Shetler was issued a citation for speed too fast for traffic conditions.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Chesterfield Police Department, as well as Anderson Fire and Madison County EMS.
