GREENFIELD — United Way of Central Indiana is coordinating its annual community-wide effort to collect new school supplies to distribute to Hancock County children in need. Community partners will collect supplies, including businesses, service organizations, churches and families.

Donations will help hundreds of area students have the essentials they need to start school ready to learn. Supplies will be distributed to all 18 public schools that serve kindergarten through eighth grade. Families in need may contact their school social worker for information on receiving the supplies.

On July 11, donors can help “Fill the Bus!” when supplies may be dropped off at the school bus located at Walmart, 1965 N. State St., Greenfield from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will be available to assist in unloading supplies from vehicles.

“Purchasing school supplies can be a daunting concern for many local families struggling to make ends meet. Backpack United helps remove a barrier to learning for many children living in poverty in Hancock County,” said volunteer coordinator Jeannie Roberts. “This is an important and worthwhile priority for our community.”

Priority items needed include backpacks, dry erase markers, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, ear buds, pencils, pink erasers, washable markers and two- pocket folders. Other needed items are colored pencils, highlighters, wide rule spiral notebooks, tissues and plastic pencil boxes.

Supplies and monetary donations will be accepted until July 20. All donations of school supplies and funds will be used in Hancock County for Hancock County students. Checks should be made payable to United Way of Central Indiana with Backpack United — Hancock County written in the memo line and mailed to United Way of Central Indiana — 1 Courthouse Plaza, Greenfield, IN 46140.

For more information or to arrange donating, contact Jeannie Roberts, volunteer engagement coordinator, Area East, United Way of Central Indiana, at 317-414-8288 or [email protected].
