GREENFIELD — With a construction project to build a free-admission splash pad at Riley Pool already underway, Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department officials have their eye on what’s to come.

The parks board announced this week it plans to ask city leaders to borrow $3.3 million to pay for a renovation project at Riley Pool, 300 Apple St., Greenfield. The Greenfield City Council will vote on whether to approve the loans at its May meeting, said attorney Bruce Donaldson with Barnes and Thornburg, LLC. Public hearings and further discuss on the plans will be held in May as well, he said.

The pool renovation comes on the heels of city projects to renovate Greenfield Fire Territory’s Station 2 on New Road and parks department’s the splash pad project. Buzz Krohn, an accountant with O.W. Krohn & Associates, said city planners have intentionally spaced out the projects to keep the burden on taxpayers low. As the bonds are paid off through 2031, they are expected to raise the tax rate no more than 7 cents, Krohn said.

The project to renovate the existing pool and its amenities is planned to begin in the fall of 2018 and open in May 2019, officials said.

The project is expected to add shade structures, cabanas, renovated bathrooms and locker rooms, as well as a reconfigured admission area.

“The pool was built in 1981,” Krohn said. “It’s time to do some work.”
