Barbara Jean Mayes, 81, of Winter Haven, FL, passed away at home on Friday, February 23, 2018. She was born August 29, 1936, Indianapolis, IN, the daughter of Marvin Rufus Brown and Ethel Mae Daws. She worked at Sugar Creek Convalescent Center starting as an aide with passion advancing to assistant administrator in the 60’s through 80’s.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mayes was predeceased by her husband, Atha Sylvester Mayes, daughter, Cindy Lu Bishop and 2 step-grandchildren. She is survived by her beloved companion, Ken Smith, and children, Anthony (Linda) Mayes, Rita (Jerry) Humphries, Larry (Sue) Mayes; grandchildren Robert Solloway, Jennifer Thomas, Carlee Prater, Tiffany Costello, Ty Costello; great-grandchildren Melody Thomas and Mychelle Miller; and goddaughter Sherrilyn (Brian) Costello, 7 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren.
Barbara enjoyed cooking for her family, doing ceramics, porcelain dolls, costumes for Children’s Theater, shopping, gardening, boating, and motorcycling with family and friends.
A memorial service is April 7, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church at 3255 N. German Church Road. Visitation starts at 10 a.m. and the service begins at 11:30 a.m. Her remains will be at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
