HHC weekly basketball honorees announced

The Hoosier Heritage Conference announced its weekly honorees for both boys and girls basketball Tuesday. Players of the Week were chosen based on their individual performances for the week ending Jan. 6.

Boys Players of the Week

Logan Smith, Mt. Vernon

Smith had a big game with 34 points on 12-of-19 shooting, as well as six boards, in the Marauders’ 96-91 quadruple-overtime win against Greenfield-Central on Friday. The victory improved Mt. Vernon’s season record to 7-4 and 1-3 in the HHC.

Luke Bumbalough, New Castle

Luke Bumbalough of New Castle was named the HHC Boys Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 30. Bumbalough had 42 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in two Hall of Fame Classic victories to earn the award.

Girls Player of the Week

Cameron Tabor, New Castle

Tabor had 36 points, 11 rebounds and two assists in two Trojans victories to earn her fourth HHC Player of the Week honor this season. Tabor is averaging 21.8 points per game and shooting 54 percent from the field this season to lead the league.

Sophie Williams, Mt. Vernon

Sophie Williams of Mt. Vernon was named HHC Girls Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 30. Williams had 36 points and 26 rebounds as the Marauders went 2-1 at the Twin Lakes Tournament.

Carmel No. 1 in ICGSA weekly rankings

The Carmel Greyhounds jumped to No. 1 in the latest Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association’s weekly girls basketball rankings. Previously second, Carmel moved up along with No. 2 Pike, formerly third. North Central dropped from first to third.

First-place votes are in parentheses. Team records are as of Sunday, Jan. 8.

Pacers request waivers on forward Wilkins

The Indiana Pacers announced Sunday they have requested waivers on forward Damien Wilkins. The 6-foot-6, 37-year-old Wilkins played in 19 games, starting one, and averaged 1.7 points per game.
