Performances celebrate sacred season

HANCOCK COUNTY — There’s a lot of set building, decoration hanging, costume sewing and music rehearsing going on this time of year at area churches.

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas.

From concerts and cantatas to plays and pageants, there are many opportunities to take in the sacred season in sight and song. Here’s where to find them:

10:45 a.m. Dec. 10: “Almost There” musical at Fortville Church of the Nazarene, 701 S. Maple St. Information: fortvillenazarene.org; 317-485-6443.

2 p.m. Dec. 10: Handbell Ring and Share at Cross of Grace Lutheran Church (ELCA), 3519 S. County Road 600W, New Palestine. Several handbell choirs from different churches come and share a few pieces of the Christmas music they’ll share at their own churches’ Christmas services. Refreshments follow. 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 10: “Night In Bethlehem” at Brandywine Community Church, 1551 W. New Road, Greenfield. Re-enactors present an interactive glimpse into Bethlehem in Bible times. Guided tour groups head through the stations every 10 minutes or so. Stop by the potter’s shop, try your hand at weaving, and step outside to visit the manger. 6:30 p.m. Dec 10: concert at New Palestine United Methodist Church, 3565 S. County Road 500W, New Palestine. Donations will be accepted to help families in need. A cookies and punch reception will follow. Information: npumc.com or 317-861-4390.

6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11: “Night In Bethlehem” at Brandywine Community Church, 1551 W. New Road, Greenfield.

6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 12: “Night In Bethlehem” at Brandywine Community Church, 1551 W. New Road, Greenfield.

7 p.m. Dec. 15: Christmastide Celebration 2017 at Trinity Park United Methodist Church, 207 Park Ave., Greenfield. Greenfield Sertoma presents this concert to help Santa’s Helpers; it features Brandywine Wind Band, Jazz Band, Wilkerson Dance Studio, with special guests Pam Johnson, Ted Jacobs and Anita Workman. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Information: Christmastide Celebration on Facebook.

8:30 a.m. Dec. 17: Cantata at Bradley United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main St.

10:30 a.m. Dec. 17: “Isaiah Jones and the Seekers of the Lost Christmas Treasure” at Calvary Baptist Church, 1450 W. Main St., Greenfield. Nearly 60 children who attend the church and/or its Noah’s Ark Daycare After-School Ministry will present this Christmas musical by Christy Semsen.

10:30 a.m. Dec. 17: “Really, Really, Really Good News,” a children’s Christmas musical, at Fortville Church of the Nazarene, 701 S. Maple St. Information: fortvillenazarene.org; 317-485-6443.

11 a.m. Dec. 17: Cantata at Bradley United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main St.

3 p.m. Dec. 17: “Isaiah Jones and the Seekers of the Lost Christmas Treasure” at Calvary Baptist Church, 1450 W. Main St., Greenfield.

6:30 p.m. Dec. 17: cantata at McCordsville United Methodist Church, 6247 W. Broadway, McCordsville. Information: 317-335-3705; mccordsvilleumc.org.

7 p.m. Dec. 19: Christmas play by St. Michael School, performed in the auditorium of Greenfield-Central High School.

7 p.m. Dec. 22: Musicians’ Concert in the sanctuary of Greenfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 23 N. East St. The program will feature the Greenfield Community Orchestra and the church’s musicians and choirs.  A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.  The public is invited.

9 a.m. Dec. 24: “Our Savior is Born” at Mohawk United Methodist Church, 2045 W. County Road 400N, Greenfield. Children and youth of the church will present this musical.

10:30 a.m. Dec. 24: “Bethlehem Morning” cantata with chancel and handbell choirs, Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church, 3179 N. County Road 600W, Greenfield. Information: mcmethodist.com; 317-894-8965.
