Girls golf state finals begin today in Carmel

The 45th annual IHSAA girls golf state finals begins today at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.

New Palestine sophomore Annaliese Fox is set to compete during the two-day, 36-hole event, which includes 100 participants. Fox will tee off at 10:27 a.m. on the 10th hole today.

Tickets for the event are $12 per person. Spectators will use off-site parking southwest of the roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and River Road. Shuttles will be offered to and from the golf course.

The golf course is not accessible from the north, as River Road at 146th Street in Carmel is closed to traffic.

Registration open for Little Cougar hoops

The 2017 Little Cougar Basketball League registration is still open for boys in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Registration can be completed online only at gcybb.siplay.com. The deadline to register is today.

The fee to participate is $50 per player or $45 per player for families of two or more players. After today, a $10 late fee will be applied to each registration. A spot in the league cannot be guaranteed after Draft Night on Oct. 5.

League registration includes: free admission to all Greenfield-Central High School basketball games, a Cougar basketball, weekly team practices, introduction at a high school game, 12 league games, and a team shirt.

Standouts picked for weekly HHC honors

Hoosier Heritage Conference Players of the Week were announced for football, soccer and volleyball. The honors are for the week of Sept. 25.

Football Players of the Week

Offense: Charlie Spegal, Delta

•The state’s top rusher, Spegal had another huge game with 43 carries, 353 yards and six TDs in Delta’s 56-49 win against New Castle.

Defense: Sam Lewis, Shelbyville

•Lewis had three interceptions in the Golden Bears’ 29-28 victory against Yorktown, including one that sealed the game.

Special teams: Max Burhenn, Mt. Vernon

•Burhenn blocked a punt and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown in the Marauders’ loss to Pendleton Heights.

Volleyball Players of the Week

Kenzie Knuckles, Yorktown

•Knuckles had 98 kills, eight aces and 64 digs in the Tigers’ 7-0 week. She had double-doubles against Greenfield-Central and Cathedral and a 52-kill day at the Muncie Central Invitational.

Abby Turner, Delta

•Turner had 37 digs and 81 assists in three victories for the Eagles last week, including a conference win against Shelbyville and a big four-set win over Carroll (Allen).

Boys Player of the Week

Cole Pierce, Greenfield-Central

•Pierce had three goals and was strong defensively for the Cougars as they shut out Yorktown and Shelbyville.

Girls Player of the Week

Maddy Miller, New Palestine

•Miller had a goal and an assist in the Dragons’ 2-1 victory against Pendleton Heights.
