GREENWOOD

Luther “Gene” White, 88, of Greenwood, went home to be with the Lord on the morning of September 22, 2017 at his residence following a short illness. He was born on August 23, 1929 in Deer Lodge, Tennessee to the late Luther B. and Ruah Mae White.

On November 4, 1950 he married the love of his life Nancy Mills at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. Gene proudly served his country, serving in the United States Army. He was the owner of L. Gene White Insurance services for over 60 years.

Gene was a lifetime member of the Life Underwriters Association, Kiwanis Club in Indianapolis; he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the governor of Kentucky and was awarded by the mayor of Indianapolis for founding The Olive Branch Annual Thanksgiving dinner. He performed charity work most of his adult life, but was very quiet and unpretentious about his community involvement. Gene spent his life serving others.

He was an avid golfer, and shot a hole-in-one at the age of 85. Gene will be remembered as a great husband and father and lived the example he taught his family. Some of the nicknames Gene was known by were “The Professor”, “a family man”, “glue of the family”, “like a father”, “Clean Gene” and “friend”. He was a long time member of Olive Branch Christian Church and remained faithful to his convictions the rest of his life.

Gene is survived by his wife Nancy White; sons Ron (Beverly) White and Tom White and sister Mae Gallimore. He is preceded in passing by his parents.

Services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday September 27, 2017 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the mortuary. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
