Walter P. Worland, 94 of Greenfield, IN, passed away on August 10, 2017 at his residence. He was born on January 2, 1923 in Greenfield to the late Walter & Florence (Jackson) Worland

During high school Walter was called to serve his country and enlist in the U.S. Air Force during WWII instead of graduating with his senior class in 1942. He received his high school diploma in March of 2014 from Greenfield-Central High School. Walter married the love of his life, Virginia Griffey on February 16, 1943. He spent his career at both the Greenfield Daily Reporter serving as Managing Editor for 31 years and the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin for 14 years serving as their magazine editor.

Walter was a dedicated member of Trinity Park United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Hancock Masonic Lodge F&AM #101, Scottish Rite, Order of the Eastern Star, Red Cross of Constantine, Murat Shrine, was Grand Commander of Knights Templar Indiana. He was awarded the distinction of a 33rd Degree Mason. Walter was a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Greenfield, American Legion Post #119, served on the Greenfield City Council, the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning. He received the coveted Governors Award from Governor Mitch Daniels and Greenfield Mayor Chuck Fewell proclaimed May 18, 2017 as Walter P. Worland Day. Walter made many friends throughout the years, his love and dedication to the Greenfield community is unmatched. Walter’s philanthropic spirit will leave a lasting footprint on the Greenfield community. Friends and family surprised Walter with a grand 90th birthday party which he enjoyed so much, he quoted ” I hope I live to be 100 so we can have another surprise party”.

Surviving Walter is his God Daughter, Debbie ( Steve ) Wilkerson of Greenfield; sister, Patricia Worland of Franklin and an entire community of friends.

Preceding Walter in death are his parents mentioned above; wife, Virginia Worland; brothers, Harry Worland; Francis Worland; Robert Worland; Kenneth Jackson; and sisters, Phyllis Shacklock and Lillian Worland.

Friends may visit from 3:00pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, 1780 W. Main St, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the funeral home with calling one hour prior to the service. Burial immediately following at Park Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.

Walter was proud to be the first Major Benefactor to the Hancock Regional Hospital Hospice Unit and in honor of him memorial contributions may be sent to Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation, designate Hospice, 801 North State Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140.
