HANCOCK COUNTY — Despite a slow start, Hancock County’s Salvation Army red kettle campaign this year raised almost $34,000 for families in need.

The total amount falls just shy of the organization’s goal of raising $35,000 but exceeds what donors chipped in the previous year, said Jim Peters, local coordinator of the campaign.

Volunteers for the campaign stationed themselves outside of local stores, ringing bells for donations; the effort raised almost $25,000 in the last week of the campaign.
