GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Adult Literacy Coalition recently awarded a continuing education scholarship to a student who achieved his high school equivalency diploma after attending classes at the Hancock County Learning Center.

Shandan Kline of Carthage received the 2016 Peg Strickland Memorial Scholarship. After graduation in 2010, he began working for his local fire department. He is currently an emergency medical technician and is enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College, where he is working to become a paramedic.

The scholarship is named for Peg Strickland, who founded the coalition in 1988 after retiring from teaching first grade.

The Hancock County Learning Center, 892 S. State St., accepts students at least 16 years of age who are not enrolled in public school and need assistance with furthering their education.

Classes are free and offered 9 a.m. to noon and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. To make an appointment, call 317-318-1006.
