Marvin “Red” Vail, 88, of Crawfordsville and formerly of Linden, passed away Wednesday night at Lane House Nursing Home.

Red was an avid IU and Chicago White Sox fan. He was a member of the Eagles, VFW and Darlington American Legion. For several years, he was a youth baseball coach at Linden in Pee-wee, little league and pony league. He was an IHSAA official in baseball and basketball. He was also an avid bowler.

Red went to Linden schools all twelve years and graduated with the class of 1946. He served his country in the Army from 1946 to 1948 and was honorably discharged as a corporal. He drove a gas truck for many years, starting with City Service, which later would become Marathon.

Born August 13, 1928, in Linden, he was the son of Ernest and Dorothy Vail. He married Martha M. Campbell on June 9, 1950, in Linden. She passed away Oct. 14, 1999.

Survivors include daughter, Denise (Bob) Reese of Crawfordsville; son, Mark (Ann) Vail of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Jason Reese, Morgan (Landon) Morris, Lauren Vail, Kyle (Laura) Vail; one great-grandchild, Harrison Edward Morris; sister, Linda Mussche; brother, Harlan Vail.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Vail; sister, Virginia Sayler; two brothers, Jim Vail and Bob Vail.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, at Burkhart Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, the funeral home led by Pastor Tami Mussche.
