Greenfield-Central sweeps New Castle

Greenfield-Central’s swim teams swept New Castle on the road Thursday.

The boys won 140-35, including 10 first-place finishes, while the girls won 138-40. The girls finished with a win in 12 races.

Each team won all three relays, while Ben Rader finished first for the boys in diving. Cougars’ senior Shyanne Milne won the diving competition on the girls side.

Also for the boys, Ethan Kile won the 500-yard freestyle. Kile was also on each winning relay team. Cam Rader won the 100-yard backstroke and teammate Austin Payne won the 50-yard freestyle. Payne was also on the 200-yard freestyle relay team.

For the girls, sophomore Carley Logan won four blue ribbons in a dominant showing. She won the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle, individually, and was on the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

Hannah Russo won the 100-yard butterfly and was on the winning 200-yard medley relay team. Hannah Walden was on the medley relay team, as well, and won the 100-yard breaststroke.

New Palestine tops New Castle

New Palestine’s swim teams earned two wins over New Castle in a dual meet Wednesday at New Castle.

The Dragon boys won 87-58, while the girls won 98-78.

Individual winners for the boys were Colin Stacey in diving, Louis Holbrook in the 100-yard butterfly, Steven Thompson in the 100-yard freestyle and Tyler Carter in the 500-yard freestyle.

For the girls, Emma Nobbe in the 200-yard freestyle, Natalie Shanahan in diving and Maria Virt in the 100-yard breaststroke. Nobbe led a 1-2 finish with Kaylynn Crawmer in the 200-yard freestyle.

Wrestling

Mt. Vernon handles Daleville

Mt. Vernon’s wrestling team beat Daleville on Wednesday, 69-12. The Marauders are now 8-3.

Winning for Mt. Vernon was Jeremiah Kolter, Martin McConnell, Chase Wilkerson, Max Hayes, Chris Wilkerson, Noah Hanson, Drake Kendrex, Drake Tackett, PJ Sterrett and Peyton Wuerch.

Lapel edges Eastern Hancock

Eastern Hancock’s wrestling team lost to Lapel on Wednesday, 41-36.

The Royals return to the mats today at the Cambridge City Lincoln Invitational.

Cougars top Franklin Central

Greenfield-Central’s wrestling team beat Franklin Central on Thursday, 37-30. The Cougars are now 6-1.

Greenfield-Central had eight wins on the day. Gavin Rose won by pin fall at 113 pounds, while Carter Noehre won by tech fall at 120 pounds. Austin Mullins won by a 9-3 decision at 132 pounds and Micah Ballenger won by pin fall at 152 pounds.

Also for the Cougars, Brad Lowe (170), Aaron Young (220) and Hunter Gulden (285) won their respective weight class on Thursday.

Greenfield-Central returns to action today at Western Boone.

Girls Basketball

Mt. Vernon falls to Westfield

Westfield defeated Mt. Vernon on Wednesday, 35-29.

The Marauders led 26-13 halfway through the third quarter but committed 11 turnovers en route to the loss. The Shamrocks ended the game on a 22-3 run and won the fourth quarter 19-3.

Sophie Williams had eight points and 12 rebounds in the loss to lead Mt. Vernon.

The Marauders are now 2-6 and play at Pendleton Heights today at 1:30 p.m.
