FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon School Board on Monday night approved a recommendation to renovate Mt. Vernon Middle School to help accommodate the district’s anticipated growth.

Last month, a committee charged with studying the district’s facilities to identify how much growth the district can expect in coming years and how to make room for a growing student population recommended district officials consider renovating the middle school.

The renovation would add 20 classrooms, expand the cafeteria and add large meeting spaces for students.

The school board unanimously approved the recommendation, estimated to cost about $10 million, Monday night.

Superintendent Shane Robbins has said the district will consider borrowing money to pay for the project, but taxpayers shouldn’t see an increase on their property tax bills because the district recently refinanced older loans to pay them off sooner.
