Three cars parked outside restaurants in Greenfield were broken into Thursday afternoon, with the assailants smashing the vehicles’ windows and stealing items while owners dined inside, officials said.
Customers at the restaurants came out to the parking lot after eating lunch to find their windows smashed and various property missing, though officers are still investigating what was taken, police said.
Two cars parked at O’Charley’s, 1993 N. State St., and one car parked at Applebee’s, 1792 N. State St., were broken in into, with their owners each calling 911 between 1 and 2 p.m. Thursday to report damage, police said.
Greenfield Police Detective Lt. Randy Ratliff said the thieves likely sat in the restaurants’ parking lot for hours waiting for patrons to walk inside so they could check the empty car for belongings left behind.
Security videos from outside Applebee’s show a white minivan driving in the parking lot, and a suspect climbing out and smashing a window, Ratliff said. Investigators were not able to determined if the suspect was male or female, he said.
