Thomas A. Smith

Thomas A. Smith, 22, Shirley, beloved son of Steven and Lisa Smith, passed away Monday, July 25, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with Spina Bifida.

Tom-Tom, as he was affectionately called, endured more in his 22 years than most of us will have had to in a lifetime. Tom taught our family what the true meaning of life is. He was a courageous young man that fought for his life to the very end. Thomas received his certificate of completion from Eastern Hancock High School this year thanks to his beloved teacher, Mrs. Susan Geesa.

Tom-Tom was an avid fan of The Price is Right, Barney, Bear in the Big Blue House, Arthur and Teletubbies. His body had many limitations, but he could sure push the buttons on his DVD players and get what he wanted with his gestures and ornery ways.

Thomas had a unique talent that he could get everyone around him laughing with his deep belly laugh, and sometimes, all it would take would be opening and shutting of a door. He was full of life, and his presence in our home will be greatly missed by all that loved him.

Thomas was loved by his brothers and sisters, Erin Maynard (Bryan Moore), Kristin (Mike) Popovic, Nicholas Smith, Kylee (Matt) Smith, Tyler (Nichole) Smith, David, Jaden, Angelique and Tyrese Smith, and several nieces and nephews. Grandparents include Jerry L. Smith (and the late Ruth Smith) and the late Elizabeth and Allen Long and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Thomas also had the wonderful care and love by his “other mothers and caretakers” who we would like to thank with all our hearts for their dedicated and loving care; Kimmie, Barbara, Tamara, Thelma, Judy, Marilyn, Sabrina, Amanda, Renee, Kathy, Doris, Ebony, Shannon, Morgan and Jenny.

We would also like to thank Tendercare Home health Care, Dr. Thomas O’Connor and staff, Riley Hospital for Children, and all the nurses and doctors and staff that helped Thomas over the years and the Shirley Volunteer Fire Department for all your dedication and help.

Tom-Tom, you are now free of your wheelchair, and we are sure you are running up in Heaven in your black shiny shoes and talking up a storm. God bless you, our dear Tom-Tom, and your dear, sweet heart.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson, with Uncle Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be at McCray Cemetery at a later date.
