Robert “Bob” C. DeShong, 88, Fountaintown, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016, at Springhurst Health Campus. He was born on July 31, 1927, in Hancock County as the son of Robert E. and Gladys E. (Hill) DeShong.

He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1945 and received his bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1951. He served in the Army Air Corps in Okinawa, Japan. Bob married Marie L. (Low) on June 17, 1951, in Indianapolis.

He worked for Delco Remy of General Motors as an engineer for 36 years before retiring in 1987. Bob was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, Whetstone Church in Anderson where he taught Sunday School at both churches for several years, and Hancock County Genealogy Society. He was a past boy scout troop leader for his sons in Pendleton, past Kiwanis Club in Pendleton and volunteered at the Hancock County Food Pantry for several years. Bob was a lifelong Purdue sports fan. He loved to travel but his biggest joy was his family. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Marie DeShong of Fountaintown; children, Tom (Mary) DeShong of Woodland Park, Colo., Judy (Stan) Smith of Lacon, lll., Chris DeShong of Fountaintown and Andy DeShong of Swansea, Ill.; brother, James (Gwen) DeShong of Pendleton; five grandchildren, Troy (Megan) Smith, Leah (Ryan) Titzer, Christina (Jeff) Moore, Cody Smith and Aspen DeShong; five great-grandchildren, Elijah, Logan and Connor Smith, Eloise and Adaline Titzer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. and Gladys E. (Hill) DeShong; sister, Barbara DeShong and grandson, Jake DeShong.

Visitation was held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service was held immediately following the visitation at 11 a.m. Fred Powers officiated. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
